Best broadband options in the Outer Hebrides in 2026

Getting decent broadband in the Outer Hebrides has historically been a challenge. But things have improved dramatically over the past few years, and there are now several viable options depending on where you live. Here's an honest look at what's available in 2026.

Fibre broadband is now the gold standard across much of the islands. The R100 programme and commercial rollouts have brought full-fibre connections to many communities across Lewis, Harris, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist and Barra. If fibre is available at your property, it's almost certainly your best option — speeds of 100Mbps or more are typical.

For properties not yet reached by fibre, fixed wireless broadband is worth considering. Several providers offer point-to-point wireless links that deliver reliable speeds of 30–50Mbps. These require a small antenna on your property with line of sight to a base station, and work well in rural areas where laying fibre isn't economically viable.

Satellite broadband has also improved significantly. Starlink is available across the Hebrides and offers speeds of 50–200Mbps with much lower latency than older satellite services. It's a solid choice for very remote properties, crofts and holiday lets where no other option reaches.

Standard ADSL over phone lines is still available but increasingly outdated. If you're still on ADSL and getting speeds below 10Mbps, it's well worth exploring the alternatives above. The difference in day-to-day usability is enormous.
