Preparing your holiday let for guests' internet needs

Fast, reliable WiFi is no longer a bonus for holiday lets — it's expected. Guests check reviews, and poor internet is one of the most common complaints. If you run a self-catering property, B&B or guest house in the Outer Hebrides, getting your WiFi right is essential.

The first step is ensuring your broadband connection is as fast as possible. Many properties across Lewis, Harris and the Uists now have access to fibre broadband. If you haven't upgraded yet, it's worth checking availability — the speed difference is significant.

Next, consider a separate guest network. This keeps your personal devices and any smart home systems on their own private network, while guests connect to a dedicated one. It's more secure and means guests can't accidentally access your printer, NAS drive or other devices.

A captive portal — the login page you see when connecting to WiFi in hotels — adds a professional touch. You can display your house rules, local recommendations, or simply your property name and a welcome message. We set these up regularly for holiday lets across the islands.

Coverage is critical too. If your property has thick stone walls (and most Hebridean properties do), a single router won't reach every room. We install additional access points to ensure guests get strong signal in every bedroom, the kitchen, and ideally outside too.

Finally, consider a usage policy. Most residential broadband connections have fair usage limits. If guests are streaming 4K video all day, it can slow things down. A simple note about reasonable usage, or a bandwidth management system, keeps things fair for everyone.
